Welcome to the DeKalb County State Court Probation Department, created and legislated by the governing authority September 16, 1992, through HB 1607. We are a full-service law enforcement agency, made up of administrative staff and POST certified, sworn officers who protect and serve the community.  The Probation Dept. is an integral part of the criminal justice system and law enforcement community of DeKalb County, Ga.  The hard-working men and women of DeKalb County State Court Probation are proud of the contributions supporting and servicing the State, Magistrate and Superior Courts of DeKalb County, Ga. Adult Probation Officer - $50,887

 Purpose of Classification:

To monitor an assigned caseload of adult offenders who become involved with or subject to the intervention of the County State Court.

Essential Functions:

Provides probationary supervision for a caseload of adult offenders; reviews court records and court orders, determines obligations of offenders; conducts intake interviews; collects data and records case intake data; obtains school records and family and social history; explains conditions of probation related programs and the consequences of probation violation; installs ankle monitors and tracks probationers utilizing tracking software (if applicable); performs drug screening; transports probationers as required; prepares reports for use in screening and placement of probationers; closes cases or discharges probationers from supervision per case time limit.

Formulates case plans for offenders; makes home, school, and or/field visits; establishes goals and sanctions; secures court ordered or sanctioned services with partnering agencies; assists probationers with making amends with victims if ordered; monitors compliance with completion of restitution; makes referrals regarding counseling, community service, tutoring, mentoring, and work readiness training; and monitors clients’ school and work attendance and participation in resource programs if ordered.

Performs court officer/reporter duties; schedules, prepares an presents cases within mandated time limits; provides notification to probationers of upcoming hearings; identifies witnesses, victims and other relevant individuals needed to appear in court; prepares and executes subpoenas, summonses and other legal documents; provides testimony in court; conducts case related research and makes recommendations for dispensation of cases.

Provides individual, family or group counseling as needed to ensure compliance with court orders; ensures progressive efforts toward rehabilitation and prevention; provides crisis counseling and mediates family or interpersonal conflicts; provides access to and attends health screening and makes referrals as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Science, Criminal Justice or related field required; this is considered an entry-level professional position; however, previous work experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.

Administrative Support - $42,000

Purpose of Classification

The purpose is to perform specialized administrative duties and process routine legal documents in support of assigned court functions.

Essential Function

The following duties are normal for this position.  The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

Performs customer service functions by telephone, by mail, and in person; provides information and assistance regarding court activities, services, procedures, documentation, fees, case status/disposition, or other issues; reviews and accepts legal documents in accordance with court procedures and prescribed time frames; distributes forms and documentation; responds to routine questions or complaints; research problems/complaints; and initiates problem resolution.

Reviews incoming and outgoing documents for completeness and accuracy of information; and processes documents for filing as required in accordance with department rules.

Processes daily case files; receives daily cases; creates permanent files; assigns to appropriate judges; documents assignments in shared spreadsheet; distributes file copies; and stamps new paperwork.

Performs data entry in specialized program applications; scans, indexes and records court case information and or legal documents; audits and reviews data for accuracy; and maintains accurate records and filing systems.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; one year of customer service, administrative and/or record keeping experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.  May be required to possess and maintain a Notary Public Certification.

Inclement Weather Announcement

Given the statewide State of Emergency and in accordance with the Judicial Emergency Order issued by DeKalb County Chief Superior Court Judge, Shondeana C. Morris, all courthouse divisions of DeKalb County State Court will be closed from Sunday, January 25, 2026, beginning at 8:00 am until Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 8:00 am when the Court will resume normal proceedings.

How can I check to see if I have a bench warrant?

You must go to the DeKalb County Jail with a State issued ID to inquire about an active warrant.

How do I change my court date?

You must e-file your request. The pleading will be forwarded to the judicial case manager.

How do I get a copy of the transcript in my case?

You can request a copy of the transcript with the Judge’s staff. Fees may apply.

How do I collect my judgment?

● Obtain a Writ of Fieri Facias (Fi Fa) to record a lien or seize assets.
● Levy on property (see levy process).
● Garnish bank accounts or wages (see garnishment process).

How do I file a Motion for a misdemeanor case?

You must compose your own motions and file them with the clerk’s office or via e-file. Resources: Law Library (4th floor), attorneys, Legal Aid, or DeKalb Volunteer Lawyers Foundation.

How do I appeal a sentence?

File a Notice of Appeal and pay $25. Include case number and specify whether you are appealing to the Georgia Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court of Georgia.

How long does it take for my case to be accused?

The solicitor’s office accuses cases within two years of the arrest or citation. Therefore, the Clerk’s Office does not know when an accusation will be filed. Please contact the Solicitor’s Office (404) 371-2201
